John Thier passed away on September 27, 2009 at the age of 93. He was born in Middletown, Ohio to Katherine and Charles Thier and was a lifelong resident of Middletown. He graduated from Middletown High School and worked for Armco Steel Corporation. His only time away from Middletown was the time he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp and the time he served in the 5th Armored Division as a Company Clerk during World War II (1941-1945). He retired from Armco after 43 years of employment. He was a member of the American Legion, Eagles, VFW, Knights of Columbus, Slovak Society, and Holy Family Parish - St. John's Church. He loved to play golf and his passion was baseball. He played third base for the Meadowlawn Mohawks in his younger years. His most recent accomplishment was being awarded the rank of Sergeant by the United States Army on December 12, 2007 at the age of 91. Preceding him in death were his mother and father; wife Irma (Kelly) Thier and son Michael Thier; sisters Katherine Domanick and Mary Barnes; brothers Louis Thier and Charles Thier; and grandchildren Kyle Coffey and Robbie Evans. Survivors include his wife Anna "Toodles" Thier; daughters Patricia (Michael) Fries, Kathleen Thier, Jana (Robert) Framstad, and Joni (Michael) Earach; brother Joseph Thier; stepson Leon Ingabrand, and stepdaughter Annette Coffey. He was the proud grandfather of 14 and great-grandfather of 25 and will be greatly missed. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 10:00 am at Holy Family Parish - St. John's Church, 1405 First Avenue, Middletown with Father John Civille as celebrant. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 - 8:00 pm at WILSON-SCHRAMM-SPAULDING FUNERAL HOME, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd., Middletown, OH. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Middletown Combined Honor Guard. Memorial donations may be made to Crossroads Hospice , 8087 Washington Village Dr., Building A, Suite 120, Dayton, Ohio 45458.
