John J. Okonkowski, 62, of Marquette, died Monday evening, June 27, 2011 with his family and caregiver at his side and supported by U.P. Home Health and Hospice. John was born on October 16, 1948 in Livonia, Michigan, a son of the late Edward and Kay (Mahalac) Okonkowski. He came to Marquette to attend Northern Michigan University and has lived here the past 30 years. John was employed by Smith Barney for several years as a financial advisor. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Marquette as well as the Waterfowl Association. He is survived by three children, Jessica (Damian) Okonkowski Josefsberg of Miami Beach, FL, John Joseph Okonkowski III and Derek Okonkowski, both of Marquette; one granddaughter, Liliana Katherine Josefsberg; one brother, Edward (Carolyn) Okonkowski and a nephew, Michael Okonkowski both of Livonia. John's family will greet relatives and friends on Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home. A wake will be held immediately afterward at the family home at 1879 State Highway M-28 East, Marquette. Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are kindly asked to consider the Kiwanis Club of Marquette or UPAWS (formerly the Marquette County Humane Society) in John's memory.
