John LaVier Grow 1930 ~ 2011
John LaVier Grow died January 15, 2011 of injuries he received in an auto accident. Born in Salt Lake City July 22, 1930 to LeRoy Adams Grow and Francis Elizabeth Gibson (who died when he was five). His father thereafter remarried to Edith Iola “Ike” Stout who raised him under her loving care. He graduated from White Pine High in Ely, Nevada. He met the love of his life, Ellen Wilma Henriod, in school. They married in 1950 and were sealed to each other for time and eternity in the Salt Lake Temple in 1972. Together they had three children.
He joined the Navy and proudly served his country during the Korean War (1952 to 1956) as a Machinst Mate Second Class. He was a gifted journeyman painter, carrying on the family trade. He started his own company, Memmott & Grow Painting, and later Grow Painting where he retired. He belonged to the Salt Lake Chapter of the Paint and Decorating Contractors of America (PDCA), serving as president of that organization for several years. He was proud of his involvement in painting and restoring many of the LDS Temples throughout the United States.
His family fondly remembers his knack for finding humor in life; his love of the outdoors; and his unwavering support of family. He loved spending hours in the garage working on antique cars, spending the afternoons walking about vintage car shows, and annual treks of bow and rifle hunting, camping, family outings, golfing, walking his beloved dog Taegan, and banter with neighbors, friends and family.
He will be dearly missed by his wife of 60 years, Ellen, children, John DeWayne Grow (Lisa) and JoAnna Grow Shiflett; grandchildren Xela Eaton (Paul Eaton), Haley Grow (James Donahue), Ariana Grow, Madison Grow, Will Shiflett, Jonathan Shiflett and Ethan Shiflett, nine great grandchildren, sister-in-law Colleen Grow, brother-in-law Clark Webb, Norman Grow (Midge), Jean Ballard (Cal), Gerald Grow (Hazel); Ray (Tracey) Grow; Judy Naranjo; Margie “Sue” Sundbeck (Charles), Russell “Rusty” Grow (Michelle) and David Grow (Julie), and hundreds of nieces and nephews.
