John Mariner
Greer, SC

John E. Mariner of 2 Forest Cove Lane, Greer, passed away on Friday, February 12, 2010 of complications ensuing from endocarditis.

John was a servant of his father God. He was born in Schenectady, NY in 1941 and was raised in a foreign missions-oriented home in Arlington Heights, Massachusetts. He trained as a mechanical engineer at Stevens Institute of Technology, where he also earned a Masters of Management Science. He and his bride and life-partner of 43 years, Sally, were married in 1966. John began his career at Westvaco Pulp and Paper Company in Covington, VA.

While members at Edgemont Presbyterian Church, John and Sally heard God’s call to the foreign missions field. They shared the gospel of Christ in Pakistan from 1968-1976. John served as Administrator of the Nancy Fulwood Hospital in Sahiwal, Pakistan, and evangelized in the villages. In 1975, John was appointed as the first full-time executive director of World Witness, the board of foreign missions of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian church. God used John to build the mission, and under his leadership, the mission experienced tremendous growth, bringing the gospel to multiple nations. John spent much of his career traveling around the world, overseeing and encouraging the missions teams. In addition, John served on numerous boards of directors, including that of EFMA, IFMA, Bethany Christian Services, ACMC, Middle East Media Board of Reference of World Relief, Board of Reference of American Leprosy Mission, Nancy Fulwood Hospital Society, Multan Woman’s Hospital, Pakistan Bible Correspondence School, and Gujranwala Christian Technical School. John was a gifted administrator and communicator, and served with a compassionate heart. He retired from his position as director in 2005.

John spent his life investing in people. During retirement, John was active in Good News Club (child evangelism), delivering Meals on Wheels, and as a ruling elder at Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church. John’s joys in life were spending time with his three daughters and eight grandchildren, fellowshipping with people, and seeing the gospel proclaimed.

John is survived by his wife, Sally, and by daughters and sons-in-law, Martha and Matthew Snyder of Charlotte, NC, Faith and Mike Skillman of Lancaster, PA, and Debbie and Brent Rexer of Nashville, TN; his sister, Ruth Mariner of San Jose, CA and his brother, Martin R. Mariner of Corning, NY; and his grandchildren, Megan, Natalie, and Lauren Snyder, Hannah and Carson Skillman, and Catherine, Abby, and Caroline Rexer.

The funeral service will be at 10:00 am on Monday, February 15, 2010 at Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Andy Lewis officiating. A time of fellowship will follow immediately following the service. Private interment will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Greenville, SC.

Memorials may be sent to World Witness, One Cleveland Street, Greenville, SC 29601.
