Dateline: Belmont, NC JOHN MELVIN RAYFIELD Mr. John Melvin Rayfield, 84, of Belmont, N.C. passed away on March 1, 2010 at Covenant Village, Gastonia, NC. John was born on February 11, 1926 to John Bruce and Bertha Robinson Rayfield. He was educated at Belmont Abbey, Gaston College, and La Salle Extension University. John retired from Homelite-Textron with 33 years of service and was Homelite's Distribution Manager. He was also a WWII Navy veteran serving in the Pacific theaters. He was very active in Belmont's Ebenezer Methodist Church, serving as Chair of the Administrative Board, Council of Ministries, Finance Committee, Building Committee, and Auditor Committee and he was a Lay Leader. Also, he was a sponsor of the Boy Scouts of Ebenezer. Being very civic minded John was past chair of Gaston Traffic Club, past President of Gaston Skills serving for 18 years and past President of Gaston Economic Development Committee. His interest in politics led him to become Chairman of the Gaston County Republican Party. John served in the State Legislature in Raleigh, N.C. for 12 years where he was active on several committees including Community Colleges, Education, Finance and Campaign Finance Reform. He also was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, which is one of North Carolina's highest honors. John took great satisfaction in helping local families. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sisters, Margie Hope, Doris Lorance and Alice Baker, all of Belmont, N.C. Survivors include his best friend and beloved wife of 65 years, Jacqueline "Jac" Rayfield, daughter, Andrea Rayfield Franklin and husband Denny of Charlotte, N.C., brothers-in-law, Ray Baker and Bob Lorance of Belmont, N.C., step grandchildren, Tracey Franklin of Black Mountain, N.C., and David Franklin and family of Winston-Salem, N.C. Funeral service will be at 2:00 PM on March 4, 2010 at Ebenezer Methodist Church in Belmont, N.C. The family will receive friends immediately after the service. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ebenezer Methodist Church at 120 Belmont-Mount Holly Road, Belmont, N.C., 28012.
