John Paul Bicanich, 63, of Virginia, MN; Farmington Hills, MI; and Naples, FL died Friday, September 28, 2012, peacefully at home, surrounded by his family. He was born on July 2, 1949 in Virginia, MN, the son of John Gregory and Anne Marie (Sertich) Bicanich. John grew up and attended schools in Virginia, MN, graduating from Virginia High School in 1967. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and Wayne State University with a master's degree in digital and electronic controls. John was married November 1978 in Holy Matrimony to Janet "Jeanie" Malinowski.

John's calling was engineering. He grew up dreaming of being an engineer, working for a major car company and driving a race car. Through hard work and dedication, his dreams came true with a highly respected and successful 30 year career in engineering at Ford Motor Company and driving many hours at a local amateur road course. John loved his work and made significant contributions to engine development at Ford Motor Company. The highlight of his career was the successful launch of the 1994 Ford Mustang Motor Trend Car of the Year.

John was legendary for his integrity, keeping his word and speaking his mind. He was smart and insightful, striving to do the right thing, with good ideas on how to make things better. As a person, he was solid as a rock and a dedicated family man. John accomplished many things in his life, and his Mom and Dad and were always so proud of him.

John loved automobile racing of all kinds, with Formula One racing being his favorite, and attending the Grand Prix races in Detroit, MI. John also followed unlimited hydroplane racing, and watched the races from the banks of the Detroit River. At the helm of his Wellcraft Scarab offshore boat, he motored up and down the shipping channels of the Detroit River, and into and around Lake Erie and Lake St Clair. John and his wife enjoyed co-ed softball, racquetball, and riding their motorcycles with their Michigan and Florida riding groups. John also loved playing golf, baseball, and hockey; and enjoyed alpine skiing, photography, scuba diving, travel and watching professional football.

John achieved his long time retirement goals when he retired to Naples, FL, where he spent his days at the beach, golfing, riding his motorcycle and relaxing with friends and family.

John was a wonderful, loving husband who adored his wife of 33 years, and a dedicated friend who cherished many long-term friendships. May John now be in peace, free from illness and suffering.

John was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Janet "Jeanie"; sister, Georgia (Graeme) Wilson, Australia; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, sisters, brothers-in-law, and other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to AVOW Hospice, 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, FL 34105.
