John Preston "Jack" Thompson, long-time Pacifican, passed away at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, South San Francisco, on the morning of September 14, 2011. He was the youngest of four children born to Patrick John and Ethel Abbie Thompson. He was raised on Cortland Avenue in San Francisco, with many fond memories of that beautiful city.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joan Gwendolyn Thompson; his six children, Shannon (Alan), Patrick (Jackie), Robin (Michelle), Lisa Marie, Timothy Lee, and Kelly Daniel; he is also survived by his 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was the most loving father anyone could be blessed with. He also loved the Lord, his God, with all his heart; he taught Sunday School to children and adults for many years at Holy Cross Lutheran Church on Seville Drive in Pacifica. He was also an Elder there for many years, and even the janitor there years ago. He was fun-loving with a sweet sense of humor that showed in all he did. He once brought a real sheep to Bible School when he was teaching us about Jesus, the Good Shepherd!
He taught his children the meaning of Godly virtues: perseverance, patience, peace in the midst of trials, a positive attitude, strong work ethic and the "faith as a mustard seed" that keeps growing stronger and stronger.
He will be sorely missed, and always in our hearts. Thank you, Dad - we love you.
One of the psalms he loved most and encouraged us all to memorize:
Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul; he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his Name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
