John R. Calhoun, of Johnston, died Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Services will be held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, August 1, 2009 at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Cremation will follow services and private burial of cremated remains will be held at Glendale Cemetery at a later date. John was born December 17, 1937 in Des Moines. He graduated from East High School in January 1957. John received his BA degree from Drake University in 1963 and an MS degree from the University of Missouri in 1968. He was employed by the Iowa Department of Human Services for 37 years before his retirement in May 2000. Most recently he was employed by the Iles Family of Funeral Homes as a Funeral Directors Assistant. John was a member of the National Association of Social Workers and the Academy of Certified Social Workers. He had been an active participant in the Indianola Carousel Community Theatre, appearing in many productions over a 10 year period. John was a member of church choirs in both Indianola and Des Moines, and was part of a gospel quartet and a soloist. John is survived by his wife, Nora; two sons, John D. (Carol) Calhoun and Christopher (Kim) Calhoun, both of Sioux Falls, SD; one daughter, Amy Calhoun of Los Angeles, CA; six grandchildren, Emily, Sean, Kaitlyn, Aydn, Ryan and Carson; two sisters, JoAnn Harvey of Gilroy, CA and Linda Cook of Eagan, MN and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation begins 3:00 p.m. Friday at Iles Funeral Homes - Westover Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and a Vigil Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice in Johnston or St. Pius X Catholic Church.
