He was the oldest of three children born to the late Elmer Ross and Elizabeth Spann Ross on January 1, 1934 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He received his formal education in the Philadelphia School District attending Holmes Junior High School and graduating from West Philadelphia High School in 1951. He joined the United States Air Force at age 17 where he trained as a Radio Operator and Decoder being Honorably Discharged in 1953. John was employed for the United States Navy (Submarine Supply Office) from 1953 to 1955. In 1955, John became a Philadelphia Police Officer until 1960. John worked for Global International Detective Agency for one year as a detective. John went to work for Newman Galleries as a Chauffeur and Truck Driver. He left there and went to Venango Hardware & Plumbing Supply Company as a Service Manager and Clerk. John also joined the staff of the City Commissioner Office in the Voting Machine Warehouse and worked his way up from a temporary mechanic to the warehouse supervisor where he worked for 20 years before retiring. All though joining the inner circle of Senator Freeman Hankins and State Representative James Barber. John's motivation was to become a Committee person and that he did for 40 years serving the Democratic 6th Ward 5th Division under 4 Ward Leaders, Freeman Hankins, James Barber, Mike Horsey and current leader, Peter Wilson. He also had a very special relationship with Councilwoman Jannie L. Blackwell. John's passion was helping others. He loved riding his bicycle and was an avid typist. John, "The General" as he was lovingly called, slipped away peacefully in his sleep after battling cancer for seven months. John leaves to cherish his precious memories: his wife of 56 years, Estelle Baker Ross; John Ross Jr., Anthony Ross (Lynette), Renee Ross, Danielle Ross Hunt (Gregory), Sheila Ross, Donna Ross McMurren (Calvin Sr.) all of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Elizabeth Ann (Michael) of Yeadon, Pennsylvania, and Christopher Ross (Wyita) of Tacoma, Washington; and his loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
