John Richard De Barr Seay, 25, of Apopka joined his Lord on the afternoon of April 22, 2010. John departed this life peacefully and unexpectedly after a very brief illness. He was the beloved son of Jim and Sarah Seay of Apopka, Florida, the beloved brother of Henry, Annie, and Billy Seay, and the beloved fiancé of Autumn Hassell. John attended pre-school at First Presbyterian of Maitland, where he was one of Miss Kitty’s favorites. At Spring Lake Elementary School he was a participant in the gifted program, including Odyssey of the Mind Competitions. John attended Rock Lake Middle School where his early talent for percussion was discovered and he was a member of the Concert and Jazz Bands. At Lake Brantley High School John was for four years a member of the Marching Band and headed the renowned Lake Brantley Drumline both his junior and senior years. John then attended Florida State University where he was a percussionist with the Marching Chiefs for two years. He finished his studies at University of Central Florida, from which he graduated in 2008.
John had three loves in life: his family, drumming and percussion of any description, and the love of his life, fiancée, Autumn Hassell, whom he planned to marry in the fall. John’s drum corps international activities included marching with the Magic Drum Corps, as well as the Madison Scouts and Phantom Regiment. The culmination of his drum corps career was his service as captain of the Bass Line which was ranked first in the United States in his final year of competition. John had just settled in to his first real job with the Waldorf Astoria, and spent his spare time making wedding plans with Autumn and serving as visuals coach for Timber Creek Indoor Drumline. John had just returned from drum corps indoor finals in Dayton, Ohio. John will be remembered by all who knew him as a loving and gentle soul, always more concerned with others than with himself. He was selfless in his devotion to his family, selfless in his volunteer efforts with Drum Corps and completely consumed with his love for Autumn.
In addition to his fiancée, John is survived by his parents, his brothers and sister, a grandmother, nine aunts and uncles, eleven first cousins, and a large and loving extended family. He will be missed and mourned by his many friends and colleagues. John left this life as happy as anyone could be. While we who are left behind must do without his physical presence now, wonderful memories of him will keep him alive in our hearts until we are reunited. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of John may be made to the Timber Creek Drumline, 235 Lakeridge Court, Winter Springs, Florida, 32708.
Arrangements for visitation and a service to celebrate the LIFE of John Seay are as follows. Visitation: Sunday, April 25, 2010 – Baldwin Fairchild Apopka Chapel, 601 N.
