John Wheaton Sherwood II, the son of Clement Miner and Dessie Dean (Taylor) Sherwood was born August 13, 1921 at Red Cloud, NE. He departed this life on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at the Webster County Hospital in Red Cloud, NE at the age of 90 years. John graduated from Red Cloud High school with the class of 1939. He attended the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. John enlisted in the U.S. Navy and entered the service August 27, 1942. On May 31, 1944 he became a Marine and flew F4U fighter planes. He was discharged from the service on February 21, 1946. On July 29, 1951 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Jean Ely at the Grace Episcopal Church in Red Cloud. Their marriage was blessed with the birth two sons, Bradley and James. John and Dot were great dance partners and would sometimes take a weekend trip to find their Big Band music. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2000. John began his life-long banking career in 1947 at the National Bank of Commerce in Lincoln, NE. In 1949 he started working at his family's bank, Peoples-Webster County Bank in Red Cloud. He became president in 1969. John was honored for 50 years of banking by the Nebraska Bankers Association in 1999. He continued working until 2008, and until his death, served on the Board of Directors. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, D.A.V. and a 50+ member of the American Legion. He also served as president of the Red Cloud Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Red Cloud Community Foundation. Preceding him in death were his parents, C. Miner and Dess Sherwood; his wife Dorothy and a sister Betty Sherwood. Left to cherish his memory are his sons: Brad Sherwood and wife Nancy of Omaha, NE; James Sherwood and Tammy Shaffer of Lincoln, NE; grandchildren: Ryan Sherwood and wife Laura of Omaha, NE; Kristin Williams and husband Chris of Lincoln NE; great grandchildren: Charlotte and John "Gus" Sherwood of Omaha, NE; sister Janet Crary of Superior, NE; other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Wednesday 1:30 p.m., February 29, 2012 at the United Methodist Church in Red Cloud with the Rev. Joel Rathbun officiating.
