John W. "Jack" Brooks, a lifelong Grays Harbor resident died Saturday, December 29, 2012 at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle. He was 78. Jack was born May 15, 1934 in Aberdeen, Washington to Seth Wade and Olive Laura (Sutton) Brooks. He grew up in Aberdeen and is a graduate of Weatherwax High School and Grays Harbor Community College with an Associates of Arts Degree. Jack worked many years for Grays Harbor Paper before going to work at Grays Harbor Community College as a Counselor for retraining millworkers. He married Shirley Blanche Dotson on July 4, 1977 in Reno, Nevada. She survives him at the family home in Elma. Jack served in the United States Naval Reserve. He was very involved in the betterment of his community. He was secretary/treasurer for the Elma/McCleary Lions, member of Grays Harbor 2020, committee member of Coastal Community Action Program, member of Elma Eagles, past Exalted Ruler of Elks Post #593, board member for the Elma Senior Center, board member for the Group Home in Aberdeen, co-planner of Clearwater Reunions and drove cars for Whitney's. Jack was a "rock hound", enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, and socializing with family and friends. In addition to his wife, Shirley, Jack is survived by his children; Jerry (Cyndy) Lamphiear of Fairfield, CA, Greg (Bev) Brooks of Federal Way, John C. Brooks of Elma, Laura (Bob) Hirsche of Sheridan, WY, Jean (Brian) Braaten of Aberdeen, Stephen Lamphiear of Elma, Donna (Carl) Robbins, Aberdeen and Cheryl (Darrel) Norton also of Aberdeen. He is also survived by his sister, Shirley (Norm) Billups of Florida, 16 grandchildren and 10 Great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and his son, Michael W. Brooks in 1998. Visitation will be from 3-4PM Saturday, January 5, 2013 followed by a celebration of Jack's life at 4PM at Whiteside Family Mortuary in Elma. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Elma/McCleary Lions.
