John W. Dooley, 87, of Gardner, died peacefully early Friday morning June 7, 2013 in Wachusett Manor Nursing Home after an illness. John was born in Gardner December 10, 1925 son of the late John M. and Louise M. (St. Jean) Dooley, and has lived in Otter River most of his life. John spent the last 3 years in Broadview Assisted Living, Winchendon, where he had many friends and enjoyed his time there. His wife Judith A. McCrillis died in 2000. John was a WWII Veteran, serving with the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater. He was the first Sergeant on Templeton Police Department, and later served as the Chief of Police. John volunteered with the Otter River Fire Department for 35 years. John worked for the Temple Stuart Company for 46 years retiring in 1989. After his retirement John worked for the Smith Funeral Home and the Lamoureux Fletcher and Smith Funeral Home as a funeral attendant. John was a former member and trustee of the Memorial Congregational Church of Baldwinville, and Honorary member of the Otter River Sportsmans Club, and a member of the Lt. Roger P. Warfield Post 373 American Legion of Baldwinville. John will be remembered as a loving husband, caring father, and a man with a smile that seemed to never end. He was most proud of his children and grandchildren. John cherished every moment he spent with his entire family and all of his friends. To all who knew John, he will be greatly missed. John will be sadly missed by three children; Theresa M. Racine of Gardner, Diana L. Newton and her husband Geoffrey of Royalston, and John W. Dooley Jr. of Prescott, AZ, four step-children; Michael Cullen of Gardner, Deborah LaPrise of Templeton, Dawn Cullen, FL, and Diane Cullen of Fl, 12 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by one step-daughter MaryLou Page, his former wife Louise E. Wood, and his son in-law, Henry Racine. Relatives and friends are planning to honor and celebrate John's life by gathering for calling hours in the Lamoureux Fletcher and Smith Funeral Home, 105 Central St., Gardner on Monday June 10, 2013 from 5-8PM. His funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday June 11, 2013 beginning at 11AM. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bridge St. Baldwinville. In lieu of flowers donations in John's memory may be made to the Gardner Visiting Nurses Association Hospice, 34 Pearly Lane Gardner, MA 01440, or to the American Alzheimer's Association, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.
