Joseph (Marty) Martino, age 86, of West Scranton, passed away unexpectedly Saturday at Regional Hospital of Scranton. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jean Flanagan Martino. Wed on June 24, 1950, the couple was married for 61 years. Born in Carbondale on December 13, 1925, son of the late Stephen and Palma Scalise Martino, he was a graduate of the former Benjamin Franklin High School. A proud United States Naval Veteran, he enlisted during WWII and was one of the first seamen to be stationed aboard the U.S.S. Ticonderoga (CV-14) aircraft carrier. A member of that elite carrier group, he attended their reunions for many years. He was also stationed in Japan during the Japanese surrender in 1945. Upon his honorable discharge, he attended the University of Scranton. Prior to his retirement, he worked as an Allstate agent for almost 40 years. Of Roman Catholic faith, he was a devoted, valued and respected member of St. Patrick's Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. Marty was an avid daily walker; he also enjoyed vacationing in Florida and walking along the beach. His favorite pastime was playing nightly cards before dinner with his wife. A devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and friend, "Marty" was known and loved by all for his kind heart and generous nature. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends. He is survived by his two daughters: Palma (Pam) Musheno and husband Joseph of Scranton and Barbara Sweeny and husband Howard, Sr. of Dunmore; a brother, Tony Martino of Carbondale; a sister, Jeanne Martino of North Arlington, New Jersey; four grandchildren, Joey and Karli Musheno, and Amy and Howard Sweeny, Jr.; and nieces and nephews. His family would like to acknowledge and thank the E.R. staff of Regional Hospital for all of their kindness and care. Also preceding in death were sisters, Florence Panzetta, Helen Hanson, Antoinette Greco, Madge Sleboda, Marie Frederici and an infant, Magdeline Martino.
