Joseph Stanchis, age 94, of Clarks Summit and formerly of West Scranton, passed away Wednesday at the Community Medical Center in Scranton. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Elizabeth Peffer Stanchis, on August 29, 1995. Born in Scranton on February 10, 1917, son of the late Barbara and Joseph Stanchis, he was an Army Veteran of WWII. He was a member of St. Michael's Church in West Scranton and prior to his retirement, he had worked as a gravedigger and a bartender. An outdoorsman who loved both hunting and fishing, he was famous for his fish cakes. A gardener, he was proud of all the vegetables he had grown. A loving father, grandfather, relative and friend, he will be remembered as a kind and selfless person who will be dearly missed. He is survived by his children, his son, Joseph Stanchis and wife Judith of Scranton, and his daughters, Elizabeth Stanchis, with whom he resided, and her companion John McCarthy, and Barbara White of Taylor; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Brothers, Peter and Charles, and a sister, Barbara, also preceded him in death. Blessing services will be conducted on Monday at 10:00AM in the Cathedral Cemetery Chapel, Oram Street in West Scranton, with interment to follow. Relatives and friends may pay their respects in the chapel on Monday from 9:30AM to service time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joseph's name to his family (c/o 2250 Ransom Road, Clarks Summit, 18411). Arrangements are under the care of the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue in Scranton.
