Oakdale-Joseph C. Quaratella Sr. 90 of Doyle Road Oakdale passed away Thursday April 30, 2009 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital, New London.

He was born in Westerly, RI on April 18, 1919 the youngest of five children of the late Giuseppe and Domenica Lordone Quaratella. Later his mother married Giuseppe Tavernesco. He attended Westerly High School.

Joseph met Ernestine Carlson, his future wife at a "Big Band" dance at Ocean Beach Park where their dancing won first place twenty weeks in a row. They married in November 1938 and resided at 49 Kenyon Road, Waterford.

Joe served in the South Pacific in the Army Air Force during WWII. He was employed as a chipper-grinder at Electric Boat in Groton. Fondly called "Hydraulic Joe" by many generations of shipyard workers, he took pride in the work he did there, especially on the historic submarine Nautilus. He retired in 1986 after 42 years of service.

He was a charter member of the Cohanzie Fire Dept. and a lifetime member of the New London Lodge of Elks 360. He enjoyed dancing, bowling, gardening and cooking. Dad never lost his love for good food, a colorful flowering shrub or playing poker at the local casinos. He will be remembered for sharing the poems, songs and sayings he learned throughout his lifetime. His smile and loving personality will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Joseph leaves behind 5 children: son Joseph Jr. and his wife Barbara of East Lyme; daughters Dawn Benjamin and her husband Bob of Preston; Sally Schrader and her husband Sandy, Joy Murphy and her husband Tim of Waterford and Gay Quaratella and her husband Stan Kesilewski of Oakdale whom lovingly cared for him for the last seven years. 11 Grandchildren, 8 Great-Grandchildren and several nieces and nephews
