Joseph Charles Shippell, age 64 of Chesterfield Township, Michigan died Wednesday morning, December 26, 2012 at his home in the loving care of his family. Mr. Shippell was born on August 29, 1948 in Marshall to Robert Hunter and Elsie F. (Burnham) Shippell Sr. Joseph was a graduate of Marshall High School, class of 1966. He continued his education attending Kellogg Community College. During the Vietnam War, he served in the United States Army as a sergeant and was stationed in Japan. He had been a resident of Chesterfield Township since 1993. Mr. Shippell had been employed by the Anchor Bay Packaging Corporation in New Baltimore, Michigan working as a Packaging Design Engineer. He served the company for over 20 years. On November 29, 1971, he married the former Mitsue Dairiki in West Virginia. Joseph was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt and fish, and was a member of the North American Fishing Club and the North America Hunting Club. He had an expert's knowledge of firearms, ballistics and fishing facts. Other memberships included the Moose Lodge in Port Huron and the National Rifle Association. He is remembered by his family as a loving husband, father and grandfather. He loved being a grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Mitsue Shippell of Chesterfield Twp; daughter, Amy Rau of Coldwater; son, Joel (Jessica Jones) Shippell of Seattle, WA; grandchildren, Ashli, Ava and Alaina; and brothers, Robert H. Shippell of Port Huron and Brian O. (Debra) Shippell of Ypsilanti. Mr. Shippell was excitedly anticipating the arrival of a new grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert H and Elsie F. Shippell. A memorial service to celebrate the gift of his life will be held 1:30 PM Saturday, January 5, 2013 at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home, 723 Old US 27 North, Marshall. Interment will follow in Rice Creek Cemetery. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.
