Joseph Hunter, Jr. was born on April 7, 1933 in Beaumont, Texas to Letha Hurst and Joseph Hunter. There, he attended the public school system before moving to Oakland, California, where he lived for a short time before enlisting in the US Army. After serving his country he met Muriel Pereira. They were wed on June 16, 1956 and to this union six children were born. Joseph retired at the age of seventy and spent most of his days with his family. He really enjoyed helping raise his grand and great grandchildren. Joseph liked to go fishing, going to the track to watch the horses race, and sit on the porch and greet neighbors, friends and strangers alike. Joseph was preceded in death by his mother, Letha Hurst, father, Joseph Hunter, Sr. and his second mother, Hattie Mae Hunter. Joseph leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife of fifty-five years, Muriel Pereira Hunter; three sons, Joseph, Andre and Norman; four daughters, Patricia, Letha, Melanie and Angela; one daughter-in-law, Sarah; one son-in-law, Ronnie; two grandsons, Andre, Jr. and Joseph, Jr.; seven granddaughters, Leticia, Alisha, Tyisha, Sarina, Jennifer, Jessica and Tikeisha; six great grandsons; one great granddaughter; three sisters, Linda, Donna and Paula; one sister-in-law, Sylva Jean Minors; two brothers-in-law, Raymond Bowens and Leroy Minors (RIP November 26, 2011); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors
