Joseph John Priante, 60, of Marquette, passed away Saturday morning, September 3, 2011 in Schoolcraft County while on a camping trip. Joe was born on August 8, 1951 in Ironwood, Michigan, a son of the late John M. and Ann M. (Gutt) Priante. He was a 1969 graduate of Luther L. Wright High School in Ironwood. He graduated in 1973 with a degree in physical education and a business minor from Northern Michigan University followed by some graduate studies there while also coaching the Alpine ski team. Joe was employed for 36 years at Alger Marquette Community Action Board as Director of Housing and was still employed there at the time of his death. Joe was a landlord in Marquette providing affordable housing for 35 years. In his free time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing, camping and other outdoor activities. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Jane Carmichael Priante whom he married on July 4, 1987 at the Tiroler Hof Chapel in Marquette; his mother, Ann Priante of Marquette; sister-in-law, Mari (Leland) Horras of Keota, IA; brother-in-law, Doug (Elaine) Carmichael of Chicago, IL; an aunt, Josephine (Woodward) Gray of Duluth, MN; also numerous cousins including Jean Priante of Marquette. He was preceded in death by his father, John M. Priante on December 21, 1998 as well as several aunts and uncles. Visitation will be held at the Canale -Tonella Funeral Home on Thursday , September 8th from 4 to 6:30 p.m. followed by a funeral service in the funeral home with Deacon Jack Leadbetter officiating. A celebration of Joe's life will be held on Saturday, September 10th at 11:30 a.m. at the Presque Isle Pavilion in Marquette. The family requests that you share a memory of Joe at that time. Refreshments will follow. Memorials are preferred to AMCAB Housing c/o Anne Engman, 1125 Commerce Drive, Marquette, MI 49855.
