Mr. Joseph Mark Johnson, 88, of 450 W. Walter Ave., Greencastle, PA, formerly of Columbia, MD, died at 1:35 A.M., Monday November 7, 2011 in Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, PA. Born March 26, 1923 in Six Mile Run, PA, he was the son of the late John and Roxena (Kline) Johnson. Mr. Johnson graduated with the 1941 class of Broad Top High School, Bedford, PA and in 1953 graduated with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Television Engineering from American Television Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL. Mr. Johnson served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from October 1941 to August 1945 and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. After graduating from Air Corps technical school he became an aircrew member. He was one of the original members of the "Billy Mitchell Group" and flew several B29 missions in the Pacific Theater during World War II. When living and working in Washington DC he met Marjorie Louise Cottle, formerly of Yellow Creek, PA. They married on June 10, 1949. Following their marriage they moved to Chicago. In 1997 they moved to Columbia, MD to live near their daughter and her family. In December 2007 he and his wife moved to live with their son in Greencastle, PA. Mrs. Johnson died on February 13, 2008. Since 2008, Mr. Johnson has been living between Columbia and Greencastle. Mr. Johnson was employed by Wertheimer Construction, Washington, D.C. for a short time before serving as an engineer and plant manager for Videocraft in Chicago, IL. He was also employed as the motor parts department manager by Skil Power Tools and later by Emerson Electric, Chicago, IL as a production engineer until he retired in 1987. In retirement Mr. Johnson worked as a security guard for Gould Center, Schaumburg, IL. He was an avid fan of professional baseball and football. All the years in Chicago he cheered for the Bears, but changed his alliance to the Ravens once he moved to MD. He enjoyed exploring the United States and Canada with his family on camping trips in a tent and in later years in a VW camper. His last years he enjoyed camping trips with his daughter's family and the time he spent with his grandchildren. He is survived by a daughter: Ruthann Jenkins, her husband Brooke, Columbia, MD; a son: Joseph Johnson, his wife Linda (Kubilius), Greencastle, PA; granddaughters: Brookeann and Bryanna Jenkins, Columbia; grandsons: Richard Johnson, Beloit, WI, Joshua and Cole Johnson, Greencastle; a brother, William Johnson, Bedford, PA; and several nieces and nephews living across the nation to include CA and AK. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael Mark Johnson; and two sisters: Virginia Armon and Ruthann Johnson. Services will be held at the Timothy A Berkebile Funeral Home, 214 South Juliana Street, Bedford, PA. on December 17, 2011 at 12:00 P.M. The family will receive friends from 10:30 A.M. until the time of service. Local arrangements are being handled by Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington Street, Greencastle, PA. In lieu of flowers, you may make donations to American Diabetes Association, www.diabetes.org or the Alzheimer's Association, www.alz.org.
