Joseph R. Meranti, age 57, of South Abington Twp., passed away Tuesday at Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton following a lengthy illness. Born November 16, 1951 in Jenkins Twp., son of Grace Fratamico of Jessup and Ralph J. Meranti of Fairview, N.J., Joseph was a graduate of Old Forge High School, Class of 1969. He graduated from the University of Scranton with a Bachelors Degree in Liberal Arts and Moravian Theological Seminary with a Masters Degree in Divinity. He worked as a computer programmer for MetLife Insurance for 25 years and most recently worked for Diversified Information Technologies, Inc. Very active as an elder and a lay speaker, he was a member of the Dunmore Presbyterian Church. For several years he presided at services at the First Presbyterian Church in Shickshinny, the First Presbyterian Church in Jessup and the Dunmore Presbyterian Church. A former active member of the Young Republicans, he enjoyed history and politics and he was a passionate fan of the New York Giants.
He is also survived by his three sisters; Carol Shamonsky and husband William of Dalton, Gloria Meranti of Throop, and Michele Garcia and husband James of Fairview, N.J., a niece, Meredith Morris Mead and husband David of Palmerton, a nephew, Louis Garcia of Fairview, N.J., great-nieces, Dana and Danica Mead, aunts, uncles and cousins.
The funeral will be Friday at 10:15A.M. from the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge, with 11:00A.M. services in the Dunmore Presbyterian Church, 137 Chestnut Street, to be served by both Rev. Joyce Warner, Pastor, and Rev. William Carter. Interment will follow in the Denison Cemetery, Swoyersville.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Thursday between 5-8P.M. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in Joseph's name to the Dunmore Presbyterian Church (137 Chestnut Street, Dunmore, 18512).
