J. Mike Connole passed away December 12, 2011 in Stockton, CA at the age of 87 years. He was born January 2, 1924 in Denver, CO and raised in Iowa. When he was a young man he excelled in basketball and baseball playing in the minor league as a pitcher. In his later years he turned to golf and enjoyed playing that with his many friends. He was a very witty Irishman keeping them on their toes for his next comment. Mike served as a First Sergeant in the U.S. Army during WWII and had a few interesting highlights such as being allowed to sit in for a day to watch the "War Crime Trials" in Nurnberg, Germany. He and the 9 thousand troops he was with were headed to Le Harve, France which was the Battle of the Bulge when the ship had to make a detour due to another ship being sunk in the harbor this avoiding that horrible battle. Mike worked at Rock Island Railroad, U.S. Steel and Fougar, Ray and Simon where he worked as a salesman and when he tired of the traveling he purchased Lambert's Bar and Café in downtown Stockton which he ran for 30 years. On July 26, 1991 Mike Fitzgerald from The Stockton Record featured him in his story "Downtown's Joking Barkeep Deserves a Toast." He enjoyed traveling with his wife abroad and in the U.S. Mike was the loving husband to Judy Connole for 44 years, caring brother to Margaret Genevieve Herweg of Seal Beach. Cherished uncle to Debra Newell (Bill) of Stockton. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.
