Joseph T. Materi, age 87, of Austin passed away on Friday, October 1, 2004. He was born on August 15, 1917 in Aberdeen, South Dakota to Peter and Anna Ziegler Materi. Joseph was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, class of 1941 and was commissioned in the U.S. Army, retiring in 1964 from Ft. Bliss as Lieutenant Colonel, Director of the Electronics Department, U.S. Army Air Defense School. He served in Germany, Korea, numerous posts in the United States including NORAD and participated in the nuclear testing in Nevada. As an Army Officer with Naval experience, he commanded a minesweeper in Norfolk harbor in early WWII.
