Juan was born in Durango, Mexico in 1932. His parents were Antonio and Luisa Carrera, later a stepmother Pilar. He had a large extended family. His siblings were: Luz, Antonio Jr., Hermelinda, Gilberto, Gabriel, Virginia, Elida, Josefina, Francisco and Ramona. In 1965 Juan married Taide Melero. They made residence in Los Angeles and started a family. Juan was a loving father to: Luisa, Maricruz, Rocio, Ramiro, Mirella, and Juan Carlos. His sons-in-laws are: Richard, Jorge, Brian, and Luis. The grandchildren (from oldest to youngest) are: Cleo, Natalie, Sofia, Lucas, Quin, Samuel, Keaton and Oliver.
Juan enjoyed all kinds of food and sweets, travel (Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Maine and Portland), and Dodger games. His children remember fondly the many trips to Disneyland where he skipped and had as much fun as they did.
Juan was a hard-worker whose past jobs included farming, field worker, but mainly working in restaurants. He retired in 2000 and spent his free time enjoying Mexican soap operas and soccer, reading, and taking long walks. In March of 2010 he came to visit his family in Portland, OR and unfortunately suffered a fall that made it impossible for him to return to Los Angeles. His stay in Portland allowed his children to share in his care and the final months of his life. He sorely missed his extended family in California and yearned for the sunny Southern California weather.
Juan (Papi) we will always remember you with love in our hearts.
