JULIANA M. KARMANN - age 18 - November 19, 2010 Juliana was planning to have a busy Thanksgiving week while home from college. Unfortunately, an automobile accident near Cary, Ohio on the drive home resulted in her untimely death. A freshman at Denison University, she was everybody's best friend, and could always be counted on for support. She gave people the courage to be themselves and not be ashamed of it. She was a very loving, caring person, who had an insane love for life and everyone around her. Julie graduated from Detroit Country Day School this past June after 14 years there, starting in Pre-Kindergarten. Nearly 100 of the school's faculty, staff, and family members gathered on Saturday for a candlelight vigil, and there was a student assembly in her memory on Monday. Headmaster, Glen P. Shilling has fond memories of the magna cum laude student who appeared in numerous theater productions, played on the softball and volleyball teams, was president of the French Club, and volunteered for everything from mentoring underclassmen at Country Day to serving as a mentor during a yearly event at Logan Elementary School in Detroit. "Julie Karmann was co-captain of the Country Day Lady Yellow Jackets varsity softball team in her senior year," he said. "As the Lady Jackets played in a state tournament softball game, Julie asked me between innings if she could paint my face blue and gold as a demonstration of my spirit and support for the team. Reluctant to have paint on my face all afternoon, I agreed if the team won the game as an incentive to qualify to play in the second tournament game of the day." The Lady Jackets prevailed in the first game, and Karmann met Shilling at the dugout equipped with blue and gold paint after celebrating the first game victory with her teammates. "She laughed and giggled the whole time as she plastered her headmaster's face with blue and gold paint", Shilling said. "Then, she thanked me for being a good sport, gave me a hug and led her team onto the field." Shilling described Karmann as the "quintessential Country Day scholar-athlete-artist". "Julie was an intense athletic competitor and leader of her varsity softball team, a beautiful vocalist in our choir and an actress in several theatrical performances including 'You Can't Take It With You', 'Sweeney Todd', and 'Les Miserables'", he said. "Julie will be missed by all who knew and loved her". Julie was a vibrant young woman who traveled extensively. She loved reading, electronic games, and shoes. She was very competitive and willed herself into becoming a good athlete. For several years she had a part-time job with Acura of Troy. Denison University President, Dale Knobel posted a statement on the school's website mourning the student. "I know that all members of the Denison community join me in our sorrow for the loss of one of our own. Julie was off to a great start on her college career and looking forward to the spring as a member of the Big Red softball team. Our hearts go out to her family as well as to her friends on the Denison campus and back home", Knobel said. ~~~~~~ Julie is survived by her parents, Margo and Bruce, her sister, Tess, her aunts and uncles, Mitchell & Louise Karmann, Debra K. & Roger Gardner, Paul Karmann, Michael & Deborah Savoie, and Susan Savoie, her cousins, Jill & Sarah Karmann, Emily Ct, Lauren & Jacob Karmann, and Rebecca & Rachel Savoie, and her grandmother, Joyce Nichols She also will be missed by her beloved dog, Ellie Visitation: Wednesday, November 24, 2010, from 4-8 PM at A.
