Karen (Szabo) Engel, 45, passed away peacefully at her home on June 22, 2011, after a long and courageous battle with brain cancer. Born in Cleveland, OH on April 16, 1966, she was the daughter of Michael J. and Shirley Szabo. A 1985 graduate of Connellsville Area High School, she then earned her Bachelor of Nursing degree in 1988 from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Karen's nursing career brought her to many places; a Psychiatric Nurse at the VA Hospital in Pittsburgh, a Pediatric Oncology nurse at Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Norfolk, VA, travel nursing throughout the US with Cross Country, Interim Home Care Director in Virginia Beach, and most recently home as a Case Manager for United Healthcare. A loving wife, mother, daughter and sister, Karen is survived by her parents, Michael J. and Shirley Szabo of Dunbar, PA; her husband of 15 years, Gerald; two daughters, Natalie Raeann and Elizabeth Paige, both at home; sisters, Kelly Verbus (Phillip) of Uniontown, PA and Kristin Tristani (Tony) of Dunbar, PA; brother, Kevin Szabo (Stephanie) also of Dunbar, PA; nephews, Corbin and Cullen Verbus, Trevor and Dylan Tristani, and Zachary and Jed Szabo. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Brain Tumor Association (www.abta.org).
