Karen Marie Brewer, 64, of Arkansas City, Kansas former longtime resident of Belleville, Illinois, died Saturday, January 30, 2010, at her daughter's residence in Arkansas City. Memorial services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 13, 2010, at the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, 618 Dutch Hollow Road, Belleville, Illinois ~ 62223. Pastor Jack Kurrelmeyer will officiate. Cremation has been effected. Karen was born January 17, 1946, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Paul Oral and Alfaretta Julia (York) Ellis. She was reared and educated in St. Louis. Karen worked 29 years at Scott Air Force Base outside Belleville at the NCO Club and was a work leader for Scott Lodging retiring in May of 2009. Karen served on the executive board of directors as secretary, grievance committee, and union steward for the National Association of Government Employees Local R7-23. Karen, who was raised in an orphanage after the death of her parents, was known to take in and help children who were in need of a friend. Karen loved time with family and friends and was there when they needed her. She enjoyed reading, visiting casinos, and loved animals especially cats. Survivors include a daughter Michelle and her husband Miguel Descartes of Arkansas City; a son Christopher Davis of Belleville, adopted son Bruce Weaver of Chicago; a sister Patricia Lederle of Missouri; a dear friend/sister Sheila Meyer of Belleville; a brother Richard Ellis; and two grandchildren Jamil Al-Aseeri of Belleville, and Joseph Descartes of Arkansas City. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Iris McGinnity. A memorial has been established with Hospice Care of Kansas or a charity of the giver's choice.
