Karyn J. Hanselman, 55, of Fort Myers, FL, formerly of Clifton, NJ, passed away on October 25, 2011. Born in Glen Ridge, NJ, Ms. Hanselman was raised in Clifton and lived there before moving to Fort Myers four years ago. She attended Clifton High School, leaving before her senior year to begin college early. She studied initially at Boston College and then Montclair State University, concentrating in Business Administration, Marketing and Management, earning her Bachelor of Science Degree and finishing in the upper ten of the Dean's Honor List. She then went on to the Passaic School of Drafting where she studied Electromechanical Drafting, finishing in the upper tenth of her class there as well. Further studies were done at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) where she earned her second degree, a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Ms. Hanselman worked as a Mechanical Engineer for various firms throughout her career including Turner Construction in New York, Atmos Engineering in Kenilworth, NJ, Morse Diesel International in New York and finally with Skanska, also in New York. She had also been an Executive Assistant with Hanselman Inc. and was Assistant Chief of Nuclear Medicine at Columbus Hospital in Newark, NJ. She was a member of the American Society of Professional Engineers, the Society of Women Engineers, American Society of Notaries, the Ladies Auxiliary US Coast Guard Flotilla 10-10, Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity, the Elks Lodge #2534 in Manasquan, NJ, the Hackensack (NJ) Yacht Club and was an avid scuba diver, having advanced and rescue diving certifications, and was a member of the 1.877.Scuba.USA Dive Team. Ms. Hanselman enjoyed many diverse interests in life including that of flying her family's plane with her dad, tennis, skiing, swimming, deep sea fishing, scuba diving at various islands, softball, bowling, boating, photography, stained glass and extensive travel to destinations throughout the United States, Canada, Western Europe, Greece, Iceland and Ireland. Ms. Hanselman was predeceased by her father, Kenneth Hanselman; by her birth mother, Theresa Carol (nee Defeo); and a brother, Kenneth Frank Hanselman. She is survived by her mother, Lucille (nee DeFeo) Hanselman, of Clifton; two brothers: Mark A. Hanselman and his wife, Jamie, of Cedar Grove, NJ and Kurt Hanselman of Florida; her nephew, Jake Hanselman; and aunts and uncles Norma and Bob Vander Hoff of Newton, NJ and Patricia and John Cappello of Saddle Brook, NJ. Memorial visiting will be held on Wednesday from 1:00 to 5:00 pm at the Bizub-Quinlan Funeral Home, 1313 Van Houten Avenue, Clifton. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to either Compassionate Care Hospice Foundation, 11 Independence Way, Newark, DE 19713 or to an animal rescue charity of your choice.
