Kenneth Gail Francis Martin-Shultz, M.D., Ph.D., age 59, of Brooklyn Heights, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at his home surrounded by his loving family, following a lengthy battle with cancer.

He was born July 14, 1951 in Sandusky, Ohio and was adopted by Earl and Agnes (nee Sloma) Shultz in November 1958. While growing up Kenn served as a church choir boy and acolyte. He graduated from Tiffin Calvert High School in 1969 where he was an active Boy Scout and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. This is where he began to develop his enjoyment of plants, nature, hiking, swimming, photography, music, computers and helping people in general.

Kenn showed a thirst for knowledge, in 1973 Kenn received his B.S. in Chemistry from Heidelberg College. Started graduate school fall 1973 with The University of Akron (UA). Between 1976 and 1982 he worked hard to receive an M.D. and Ph.D. from the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo in conjunction UA. His residency in family medicine at the Barberton Citizens Hospital motivated Kenn to finish his Ph.D. in Organic Analytical Chemistry from UA.

While finishing his Ph.D. dissertation, Kenn became an adjunct professor of the biomedical engineering program at UA. After teaching for several years he began consulting in the medical field working with computer systems, specifically streamlining processes and developing quality control measures. Kenneth then followed his passion of literature by working as a manager of North Olmsted’s Borders Outlet, where he retired after 10 years.

Kenneth is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years Millicent L. "Penny" Martin-Shultz (nee Martin) to whom he was married on December 30, 1972 at the Pearl Road United Methodist Church in Cleveland and where Kenneth and Penny then became Martin-Shultz together. He is also survived by his twin daughters Kathleen Jasko (Kevin) of Middleburg Heights, Ohio and Elizabeth McMillin (Keith) of Garfield Heights, Ohio and his twin sons Russell Martin-Shultz of Brooklyn Heights, Ohio and Fredrick Martin-Shultz (Dawn) of Sandusky, Ohio; his grandsons Gavin and Edward McMillin and his soon to be granddaughter Isabella Jasko due in early April 2011; his sister Patricia Hohman of Kenton, Ohio and her 5 children and their families; his father and mother in law Clarke and Virginia Martin of Brooklyn Heights, Ohio; and his sisters in law Susan Aldrich (Steven) of Cypress, Texas and their 3 children, and Virginia Lynn Martin of Fairlawn, Ohio and her 3 children. Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents Earl and Agnes, and his brothers in law Wallis Martin and Dale Hohman.

Although flowers are appreciated, the family prefers memorial contributions be forwarded to The Church of St. Leo The Great, 4940 Broadview Road, Cleveland, Ohio, 44109, or to the Gathering Place, 23300 Commerce Park, Beachwood, Ohio, 44122.

The family will receive friends at the BUSCH FUNERAL HOME, 4334 Pearl Road, Cleveland, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Friday, March 25, 2011. Memorial Mass of Resurrection to be celebrated Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. at The Church of St. Leo The Great, 4940 Broadview Road, Cleveland. The Rev. Russell P. Lowe, Pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Kenneth chose to have his body donated to the University of Toledo College of Medicine. Private inurnment will take place at a later date at Crown Hill Cemetery in Twinsburg, Ohio.
