Kent J. Slater, aged 71, of Big Rapids, passed away Monday, January 29, 2007 in Chicago, IL. Kent was a 1953 graduate of Godwin High School and a graduate of Michigan State University. He cofounded Maco Steel, Inc. in Belmont in the 1980s. He loved the outdoors and spent many hours farming, hunting, fishing and feeding wildlife. In 1999, Kent was the second person in the world to receive a heart, liver and kidney transplant. As a transplant survivor for over 7 years, he encouraged organ donations so others could also enjoy a longer life. Surviving is his wife of 49 years, Dolores (VandenBos); four children, Cherie (Carl) Vannatter, of Milan, MI; Daniel (Lois) Slater, of Howard City, MI; Kimm (Tammy) Slater of Grand Rapids, MI; and Bryan (Judy) Slater of Greenville, MI; nine grandchildren, Casey, Caitlin and Courtney Vannatter; Daniel (Jennifer), Ashleigh and Corey Slater; Jessica and Joshua Slater; and Dakota Slater; and one great grandson, Aydan Slater. He is also survived by his brother Boyd (Nyla) Slater of Comstock Park, MI and his sister Ila Howe of Alamo, TX. Kent was preceded in death by his parents Alfred and Lela (Braun) Slater.
