Lawrence William (Tony) Farry, 90, a resident of Foothills Presbyterian Home, went to be with his Heavenly Father on November 28, 2011.
Tony was born on January 15, 1921, in Newport News, Virginia. He is the son of the late Joseph P. Farry and Georgia Hogge Farry.
Tony was a graduate of Newport News High School, where he held the Virginia state shot put record for many years. He graduated from Furman University, where he played football, and met the love of his life, the late Jean Hendricks Farry, to whom he was married for 67 years.
Tony served his country as an officer in the United States Army in World War II. He served as a platoon leader under General Patton from Normandy to Germany and was highly decorated for his service. After being wounded in battle, he was medically retired with the rank of Captain.

Upon his return to the States, his injuries required him to give up his professional football contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. He instead poured himself into the life of the Pickens community, where he was co-owner of Hendricks Hardware and a builder. Tony also enjoyed his role as the first post-World War II coach of the Pickens High School football team. He served as Pickens area Magistrate, a board member for Cannon Memorial Hospital, and a Jaycee. After his retirement, he continued to serve his community with the Cannon Memorial Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels, and in many other capacities.

A dedicated follower of Christ, Tony was a member of Pickens First Baptist Church. He served the Lord in many roles, such as deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, long-time choir member and men's Sunday school teacher. His love for the Lord and his family were the driving force for all he did in life.

He was known for his love of life, his great joy in making others laugh, and his strong sense of fairness and justice.

As a resident at Foothills Presbyterian Home for the last three years of his life, he continued to show his love for the Lord, his family, and others.
Tony was predeceased by his wife, Jean Hendricks Farry.

Surviving are four daughters and one son, who are Nancy Bost (Ron) of Denver, NC, Toni Jean Ponder (Milton) of Dacusville, Paula Birmingham (Josh) of Cornelius, NC, Joe Farry (Jane) of Greenville, and Maria Owens (Ken) of Columbia; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; one brother, George Marble Farry of Richmond VA, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Tony was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Mitchell Farry.

The family would like to express its sincerest appreciation for the love and compassion shown by the nurses, staff and residents of the Foothills Presbyterian Home, the staff of Interim Hospice, and his dedicated sitters.

Visitation will be Friday, December 2, at Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens from 6-8 p.m. The funeral service will be held Saturday, December 3, at Pickens First Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Burial will follow the service at Sunrise Cemetery.

The family will be at the home of a daughter; Toni Jean Ponder, 134 Deer Creek Road, Easley, South Carolina 29640.

Memorials may be made to Pickens First Baptist Church, Foothills Presbyterian Community, or Cannon Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
