Retired Lieutenant Commander Charles A. "Jerry" Mathiesen, Supply Corps, USN, 84, passed away April 18, 2011. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, March 23, 1927 to Charles Joseph Mathiesen and Madeline Chipperfield. After graduating from Brooklyn Academy, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1945 and served his country honorably for 25 years until his retirement in 1970. He then continued his career with the Navy as a civilian until retirement in 1986. He served his military career aboard various ships and commands and was bilingual in English and French. Shore commands included USNTC San Diego, CA; Military Advisory Group, NATO, Paris, France; USN Construction Battalion Center, Gulfport, MS; USMCAS Miami, FL; US Naval Facility Antigua, BWI; US Naval Facility Barbados, BWI; USN Supply Corps School, Athens, GA; US Naval Supply Center Norfolk, VA; US Naval Station Argentia, Newfoundland; and US Naval Station Brooklyn, NY. Ships included USS Spokane (CL-AA-120), USS LSM-445, USS LSM-R-512/515, USS Wrangell (AE-12), and USS Sandoval (LPA-194). Medals and awards comprise WWII Victory, American Defense, Korean Service, National Defense Service, and multiple Good Conduct medals. Charles was a member of the Caterpillar Club of the Switlik Parachute Co., Inc., as the result of a midnight emergency parachute jump from a SNB-T distressed aircraft on May 1, 1962, in Taormina, Sicily. He also volunteered with the Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society and enjoyed many hobbies including traveling, gardening, couponing and fishing. Charles is survived by his wife, Margaret; son and wife, Christian and Linda Mathiesen of Warwick, RI; nephew and wife, Pierre and Grace Ponson of Virginia Beach, VA; and long-time friend, retired U.S. Navy Captain Robert Schmidt. He had a brother and 2 sisters. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren and their spouses, 4 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Road, is handling the arrangements.
