Retired LCDR Joe Carl Curtis, Jr., passed away on February 7, 2012. Joe was born in Macon, Georgia on July 28, 1927. He was predeceased by his parents, Joe and Jimmynell Curtis; and his brother, Lt. Col. James Allen Curtis. Joe attended Castle Heights Military Academy before enlisting in the Navy in 1944. Joe served on various ships and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He loved his service to his country in the Navy before retiring in 1969. After his service in the Navy he completed his BS degree at ODU; during that time he worked at Columbia Yacht as a Quality Manager and the Virginian-Pilot as a Route Manager. After completing his BS Degree he taught with the Norfolk Public Schools and later at the Miller School of the Albemarle. He also worked with the Liquid Development Corp. Joe was an avid military and history buff. He served briefly as a docent at the Naval Military Museum at Nauticus. Joe also enjoyed golf and was a master gardener. In earlier years, Joe was a Little League Baseball coach at NAS. In later years his happiest times were spent with his grandsons, Kyle and Christopher, going to their athletic activities. Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 61 years, Phyllis Ann Curtis. Joe is also survived by his two sons, Joe III and wife Charlene, and James Michael and wife Stacy. Grandpa Curtis also left three grandsons, Kyle, Christopher and Tyler. A host of nephews, nieces and friends will also dearly miss him.
