LCDR Robert Roehren, USN (Ret.), 86, passed away February 28, 2011, at his home surrounded by his immediate family. He was born March 5, 1924 in Pittsburg, PA, the son of Harold W. and Myrtl R. Roehren, and he lived in Virginia Beach over 40 years. He entered naval service January 1942, became an Enlisted Naval Aviation Pilot ("Silver Eagle") in 1947 and received his officer's commission ("Mustang") in July 1955. He attained the rank of LCDR and retired January 1972. He was a decorated veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Viet Nam War, rewarded with many service medals including Air Medal, Good Conduct, Navy Expeditionary, WW II Victory, China Service, Korean Service, United Nations, Viet Nam Service and Armed Forces Expeditionary. During active duty he accumulated 18, 600 flight hours. He was considered an outstanding pilot by his colleagues, superiors and passengers alike. In 1972 he began work for Lockheed Aviation at NASA Wallops Island, VA as chief pilot for administrative and research projects. In 1980 Management Services took over the NASA contract and he served as project manager until his retirement in October 1984. He accrued 23, 000 total flight hours during his distinguished naval and civilian careers. He is survived by his daughters, Michelle R. Perry and husband Norm of Virginia Beach, VA, Roberta R. Buckman of Chesapeake, VA and Suzanne Burbridge of New York; his son, Daniel P. Lawrence and wife Millie of Overland, MO; and grandchildren, Russell, Jasmine (Squeaky), Scott, Victoria, Natasha, Adriana, Corey and Tami. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lynn G. Roehren; sons, Scott, Russell and Richard; brother, Harold R. Roehren; and parents. Special thanks to the Odyssey nurses, Patty, Julie and Cheri for taking such good care of Rip. A heart felt blessing goes out to Belinda, from Care Advantage who took care of Rip during his final five weeks of life. The family will receive friends this Sunday, March 6th from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel on Virginia Beach Blvd. A funeral with full military honors will be conducted at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the cancer society or the SPCA in Rip's name. Online condolences may be sent to noperry1@cox.net.
