Lee Benjamin Hurley, age 101, of Asheville, died on Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at the WNC Baptist Home. Mr. Hurley was a native of Vienna, MD. He retired from the I.R.S. with over 20 years of service. Mr. Hurley was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving during WWII. He participated in the Battle of Saipan, and the Battle of Tinian. He also served in Korea. He reached the rank of MSgt. and received two Purple Hearts. He was also a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Hunter Hurley, who died in 1984; daughter, Jayme Denise Hurley, who died in 1990; son, Lee Hurley, who died in 2008; and sister, Elsie H. Dean. He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Linda O. Hurley, of Charlotte; grandchildren, Chrystie and Tyler Hurley, both of Charlotte; and niece, Betty Rose Krupp, of St. Louis, MO. A funeral service for Mr. Hurley will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Groce Funeral Home chapel on Patton Ave. with the Rev. In-Yong Lee officiating. Interment will follow at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association , Greenville-Spartanburg NC-SC Office, 16-A Brozzini Court, Greenville, SC 29615.
