Lee Maturo of La Jolla, Calif. died at Scripps Memorial Hospital on August 2, 2010. After a courageous two month battle she succumbed to post operative complications. Lee was born in Philipsburg, PA where she grew up and lived until 1945 when she moved to Pittsburgh, PA to attend Southside Hospital School of Nursing. She became a supervising R.N. of Labor and Delivery after her graduation. During her early years of nursing, Lee met Dr. Peter J. Maturo. They were married in 1949 and settled in New Castle, PA. In 1959 P.J. and Lee moved their family to San Bernardino, CA. They moved permanently to La Jolla, CA in 1980 to retire. Among Lee’s many interests and involvements, she was a member of Legatus, the San Diego Opera, San Diego Zoo, and the Old Globe Theatre. Lee was a member of the Knights and Ladies of the Grand Cross of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre. She was involved in the Symphony Stars and an active member of St. Joseph Cathedral Parish. Throughout her adult life, Lee coordinated and volunteered for a variety of charitable events and causes Her other activities and memberships are too numerous to mention here. Lee was a devoted wife and the loving mother of Linda Maturo Lynch, Eleanor Maturo Hubbard, John Maturo, and Mary Maturo. She was also the proud grandmother of Jason Hubbard, Megan, Kevin, Colin, Brendan, Erin, Brian, Liam, Sean, Ryan, Eamonn, Declan, Kilian, Cristin, Caitlin, and Mairin Lynch and the great grandmother of twelve.. Lee is preceded in death by her husband Peter J. Maturo and their daughter Eleanor. Lee’s fun loving attitude and zest for life will be missed by her family and friends.
Funeral mass will take place at All Hallows Church, 6602 La Jolla Scenic Drive South, La Jolla, CA, 92037 on Monday August 9th at 12:00 noon followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery in San Diego. Visitation and rosary will be on Saturday August 7th from 7 to 8 P.M. at Pacific Beach Mortuary, 4710 Cass St. Pacific Beach.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Joseph’s Cathedral, San Diego.
