Mrs. Lela Mae Shannon Askins, the daughter of the late Joe Hampton, Jr. and Katherine Scott Harrell, was born on May 8, 1951 in Florence County. She was raised by a loving aunt, Florea Wilson of Sardis, SC. On Wednesday, October 7, 2009, she departed this earthly life at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence, SC. She attended the public schools in Timmonsville, SC and graduated from Johnson High School in 1969. She furthered her education at Chris Logan College and Florence-Darlington Technical College. Her employment was with Carolinas Hospital System until she became disabled. In 1973, Mrs. Lela Mae Shannon Askins became a faithful member of St. Matthews Southern Church of Jesus Christ Apostolic under the leadership of the late Bishop F. B. Saunders and later Pastor Otis M. Davis, II. She served as Secretary and a member of the Gospel Choir; the Women Council; and the Missionary Society. In 1972 she was joined in holy matrimony to James M. Askins and to this union three children were born. Mrs. Askins leaves to cherish her memories: her husband, James M. Askins; one son, Michael (LaTawnya) Askins of Glen Burnie, MD; two daughters, Sonya Askins and Monica Askins of Florence, SC; one grandchild, Katron Askins whom she lovingly called "Boo Boo" was reared in her home; three sisters, Betty (Nelson) Jeffery and Willie Dean (David Lee) Addison, all of Timmonsville, SC; and Harriett Harrell of Las Vegas, NV; four brothers, Levern Harrell of Timmonsville, SC; Willie (Shirley) Harrell of Killeen, TX; James Ray (Mary) Harrell of Lynchburg, SC; and Cleveland (Catherine) Harrell of Columbia, SC; loving aunt, Florea (Levester) Wilson of Sardis, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
