Leland J. Winger

Leland J. Winger, 91,03/05/1919-10/2/10. Leland was born in Ridgedale, Idaho to Grace McKay Bowen and Joseph Alma Winger and raised in Ft. Union, Utah. He graduated from Jordan High School in 1937, and proudly served his country during WWII in the US Army, 71st Infantry. He married his wife of 56 years, Beverly Jean Pill, in 1944; they had six children. Leland pursued higher education at both Utah State University and the University of Utah, ultimately achieving a Doctorate of Psychology.
His life was dedicated to the education of children having worked as a teacher, school administrator and school counselor for 30 years. He was President of the Salt Lake City Teacher’s Association, as well as a member of the State of Utah’s School Board of Trustees. In addition, he was a successful mink rancher. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Leland is survived by his six children: Leland Winger, Jr., Judith Angell, Sheri Mertlich (Robert), Bonnie Shields (Carey), Randy Winger (Teresa), and Patricia Fonnesbeck (Kevin); 18 grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and five sisters: Alice Jensen, Leona Johnson, Elnora Rodgers, Ruth Pleasants and Marilyn Cannon (Vaughan). He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, as well as grandson Kyle Winger, his parents, and siblings Glayds Walker, Grant Winger and Hugh Winger.
Join us in honoring Leland’s legacy and accomplishments. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, October 9, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the Mt. View Memorial Estates, 3115 East 7800 South. A viewing will be held prior to the services beginning at 10:00 AM.
