T. Sgt. Leo P. Borel, retired after serving twenty-seven years in the Army and Air Force, was one of the earliest men to be drafted from the Port Arthur area during World War II, and one who made the service a career, passed away February 11, 2012 in Austin, Texas.

Borel was drafted 1942 and underwent basic training at Ft. Knox, KY, before taking part in campaigns in North Africa, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. He served under famed generals Patton, Bradley, Scott, and others. During the Battle of the Bulge, Borel suffered frost-bite to both feet and was sent back to the United States to recover, later being discharged on VJ Day. After sufficient recovery, Borel enlisted in the Air Force in 1949 and served in the United States, Vietnam, and Germany. He retired from the military in 1973 and moved to Austin, TX, with his wife, Mary H. Borel, and four children.

Borel was an avid bowler and participated in bowling leagues as often as possible.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, sons Eugene and Tom, daughters Laura and Rosemarie; four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar Blvd. Borel's final resting place will be at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio. The interment will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 29th.
