Our beloved, Leona Broderick was born in Woolwich, Maine on September 8, 1930 to Harlan and Eva (Cromwell) McFarland. She grew up in the country with her one brother and four sisters. She went to elementary school at Union Bridge School in Woolwich, ME, which was a one room school house and graduated from Morse High School in Bath, ME. She joined the Women's Army Corps in the summer of 1950. She married Norman Broderick in April 1951 and was married for 26 years. They moved to Arizona in 1959. Leona was a homemaker but also worked as a waitress and factory worker at times. She had five children, 2 boys and 3 girls. Leona took pride in her job as the best mother five kids ever had. Also, very proud to be a grandmother to 9 and a great grandmother to 4. Leona was a loving, happy person who had a smile for everyone. She enjoyed talking and laughing with family and friends. She also loved animals of all kinds – always had a couple of facts about any animal you could mention. She had many wonderful stories about her parents and childhood in Maine. She was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in 1974. She loved God and served as a dedicated witness until her death on January 25, 2012. Leona died faithful to Jehovah when she refused a blood transfusion in accordance with Bible standards (Acts 15:28-29). She loved her brothers and sisters in the faith and worried about those in foreign countries who didn't have it as good as she did. Leona is preceded in death by two of her children, Daniel Broderick and Elizabeth Knight; sisters, Roberta Soule, Helene Preston, Rena Frye; brother, Phil Leavitt. Leona is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Waters; daughters, Marie Owen and Carol Riggs; son, Norman Broderick, Jr.; ex-husband and friend, Norman Broderick, Sr.; granddaughters, Desirae Yourgules, Crystal Tilley, Sara Owen, Christy Kepler, Larissa Blum, Amanda Broderick; grandsons, Douglas Riggs, Jr., Jeremy Owen and Christopher Knight.
