Graveside service for Leona Sobel will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, January 3, 2012 in the Sumter Jewish Cemetery, Sumter, SC. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
Ms. Sobel was born January 9, 1929 in New York City; she was 82 years young.
Ms. Sobel attended Skidmore College in upstate New York and finished her degree from Tobe/Coburn in New York. She was a corporate swimwear buyer for Sears before she went into business with her sister in Myrtle Beach, SC. She and her sister sold the business and moved to Columbia in 1980.
Leona's love for arts led her to the Columbia Museum where she served on the board and the acquisitions committee. Ms. Sobel was also active in the Tree of Life Congregation where she held a number of positions.
Her passions in life were art, travel and her family.
She is survived by her sister, Ethel S. Brody; her niece, Janet Rush and her husband, Jerel; her nephew, David Brody and his wife, Laura; grandnieces, Nicole Rush, Jessica Rush, Jennifer Brody; and grandnephews, Reuben and Matthew Brody.
The family gratefully acknowledges the compassionate care given by Kathryn Wingate.
