Leroy Peter Fonkert was born on January 1, 1947, in Sheldon, Iowa. He was the son of Peter Jr. and Janette (Harms) Fonkert. He was born a very healthy baby. When he was 13 months old, he became very ill, which impaired his speech and hearing, leaving him partially paralyzed. He went to the Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs, Iowa, for one year, where he learned sign language and other skills. He returned to Sheldon to be with his family, who dearly loved and cared for him.
His parents, along with three other couples, started the Northwest Iowa Retarded Children's Association and sponsored the workshop across from the Sheldon City Park. The workshop grew and is now known as Northwest Enterprises, which is a subsidiary of Village Northwest Unlimited.
On October 14, 1998, Leroy moved to the Village to house # 333. The Village was a very important part of Leroy's life. His family extends a special thanks to the Village staff and all the staff at house # 333, for the care and love that was given to Leroy and to all the residents.
Leroy enjoyed being with his family and going on motorcycle rides with his brother, Rod. He also enjoyed being outdoors, fishing and riding horses.
