COLUMBIA Private funeral services for Leslee Lomas Bates were held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, assisted the family.
Ms. Bates died Monday, February 6, 2012. She was buried next to her father, Judge Lester Bates and her brother, Lester Bates, III.
Ms. Bates was born May 8, 1957 in Big Spring, Texas, while her father was a JAG Officer in the U.S. Air Force. After his tour of duty, she moved to Columbia with her family. After graduation from Hammond Academy, she attended Furman University and received a BA degree in Art, Cum Laude. Ms. Bates studied art at the University of London as well as in Italy and France. She was a member of the Furman Singers and the Furman Singers European tour group. While at Furman, she was selected as Miss Greenville and also selected as most photogenic in the South Carolina Miss Universe pageant.
After graduation, she was employed by BellSouth as an Education Representative and later worked in Atlanta in Human Resources. Ms. Bates was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church.
Ms. Bates is survived by her mother, Gertrude Lomas Bates; brother, Thomas Coke Bates, and his wife, Cynthia Lee Bates; two nieces, Margaret Clara Bates and Catherine Lee Bates. She was predeceased by her father, Judge Lester Bates, Jr. and a brother, Lester Bates, III.
Visitation is at the family home on Kilbourne Road.
The family suggest memorials be made to The Furman Singers, Development Office, Furman University, 3300 Poinsett Highway, Greenville SC 29613 or Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 3200 Trenholm Road, Columbia SC 29204.
