Lily St. John

Lily St. John, 88, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully July 10, 2011, surrounded by her family and friends. She was a true English lady, gracious, kind, generous and loving. Lily loved her scriptures, flowers, books, singing, music, jewelry, and she sparkled wherever she went. She was born to Harold Whitehurst and Florence Williams on January 25th, 1923, in Stoke-On-Trent, England. She is now reunited with her dear sister Florrie and parents. When Lily joined the L.D.S.Church, at the age of 40, it had a profound effect on her life and she has embraced the gospel all her life. She immigrated to the United States in 1978 with her youngest children, Mark and Josephine. Lily is survived by her four children, Linda (Michael), Sally (Chipper), Mark (Jenn) and Josephine. She leaves behind 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, who loved her dearly. In 1990-1993 Lily served an LDS mission on Welfare Square. She worked with Catholic Community Services with refugees from Iraq, Russia, Bosnia and Vietnam. Lily was always found helping others and visiting the sick and lonely. One of her greatest joys in her later life was working for Utah Non-Profit Housing long side her longtime friend, Marion A. Willey. The family would like to express appreciation to the staff at Avalon Valley, who took such wonderful care of Lily in her final years. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 15th, at noon, at the Imperial 1st Ward, 2738 S. Filmore Street, Salt Lake City. Family and friends may call on Thursday evening from 6-8 pm at the Cottonwood Memorial Mortuary, 4670 South Highland Drive, Holladay, and at the church from 10:30 to 11:30 prior to the services. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
