Lola Beth Shires Rogers went to be with the Lord Wednesday, October 20, 2010. We know she had a joyous reunion with family and friends. Services for Lola Beth will be 2:00 Friday afternoon, October 22, 2010 at LakeRidge Baptist Church with Rev. Bruce Cotton officiating. Lubbock services are under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home. Services on Saturday, October 23, 2010 will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the Grace Temple Baptist Church in San Angelo. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery in San Angelo under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home of San Angelo .
She was a member of LakeRidge Baptist Church. Lola Beth Rogers was born to Barney and Lola (Draper) Shires on January 15, 1928 in Chickasha, OK. The family moved to Lubbock when she was a senior in high school. She graduated from Lubbock High School in 1946 and from Texas Technological College in 1950 with a degree in Sociology and minors in Journalism and English. She was certified to teach in 1968. Lola Beth married James M. “Jimmy” Rogers on May 31, 1949 in Lubbock. She was an accomplished cake decorator because she worked at Mrs. Camp’s Bakery "putting her husband through the rest of his college." Lola Beth and Jimmy were proud parents of William “Bill”, Beth and John. They moved to San Angelo in 1955 where Jimmy was Parks Superintendent for 34 years. Jimmy was also a bi-vocational pastor and Lola Beth was a beloved pastor’s wife. She taught English at Lee Junior High for 18 years and a year at Lakeview High School. Lola Beth earned her masters degree in Guidance and Counseling from Angelo State University in 1978.
Lola Beth was an accomplished pianist, having played since she was four years old. She was church pianist at Central Baptist Church in Lubbock and every church where Jimmy pastored after that. These included Grace Temple Baptist Church in San Angelo and Pecan Baptist Church near Robert Lee where they were pastor and pianist for a total of 32 years. Lola Beth was always active in church and school activities. She also taught Sunday School. In 2001, Jimmy and Lola Beth moved to Lubbock to be closer to family. Jimmy died on October 28, 2005. Lola Beth was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Noble Shires and Justin Shires.
Lola Beth is survived by Dr. Bill & Nancy Rogers of Florence, Alabama, Beth & Willy Wilson of Bastrop and John M. & Carla S. Rogers of Lubbock; her sister, Mattie Lee Shires of Houston; grandchildren Dr. Rachel Rogers of Dover, NH, Rebekah Rogers of Rochester, MA , Jonathan Wilson of Syracuse, NY, Sarah & (Sam) Irvin of Richmond, VA , Christopher Wilson of Bastrop and Caylee Rogers of Lubbock; also, step-granddaughter Amy & Philip Archinal, step-grandson, Steven & Tanya Waddell and eight step-great-grandchildren, all of Lubbock.
We want to thank all the caregivers of Garrison Geriatric Care Center, Abiding Care, Interim Hospice and Trust Point Hospital for their loving care and kindness to Lola Beth during these last several years and days.
