Loren Michael DeFilippo Sr, 77, of Weirton passed away July 8, 2011, at Trinity West Medical Center, Steubenville, OH. Born November 27, 1933 in Lockport, NY, Loren was the son of the late Nicola and Lena Ruberto DeFilippo. He was also preceded in death by his brothers; Dominic, Angelo, Nicholas and John DeFilippo; and his sister, Virginia Rising. Loren attended West Liberty State College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education, and received a Masters of Arts in Music Education from West Virginia University. Loren was a music teacher and band director for 30 years and retired from the Hancock County School System. He was a member of the Hancock County, and West Virginia Associations of Retired School Employees. He was a member of Saint Paul's Roman Catholic Church, serving as treasurer of the Holy Name Society, Weirton Elks #1801, and the past president of the Weirton Lions Club, where he was the recipient of the Melvin Jones International Award. He served his country in the US Army, and was stationed in Germany with the 33rd Army Band. Locally, he played clarinet with the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra and many local community bands. Loren is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Jerry Brewer DeFilippo; three sons, Loren Jr. (Polly) of Cincinnati, OH, Joseph of Grand Cayman Islands, BWI and Michael (Maria) of Pittsburgh, PA; two daughters, Maria DeFilippo (Scott Ribe) of Golden CO and Kathy Hart (Jack) of Cameron, WV; three sisters, Mary DeFilippo, Ellen Anterline, and Frances Florio all of Lockport, NY; 12 grandchildren, Christopher, Brittany, Gianni, Tony, Erin, Nicholas, and Loren Joseph DeFilippo, Ashley, Benjamin, and Leah Hart, Brooks and Ryan Pepper; and one great grandson, Hayden DeFilippo. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 PM Monday, at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main St, Weirton, WV. Funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated 10 AM Tuesday, at St Paul Catholic Church, Weirton, with the Reverend Larry Dorsch presiding. Interment will follow at St Paul Cemetery, with military graveside services conducted by the Weirton Honor Guard Firing Squad.
