LORRAYNE MARQUETTE MCGEE (SCOTT), age 84 years, a resident of Elkins, WV departed this life peacefully at her home late Wednesday afternoon, September 14, 2011 surrounded by her family.
She was born Saturday, April 2, 1927 at Elkins, WV a daughter of the late Tony and Susie DeMarco Marquette. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her sister Mary Jane Carrico; her husband James A. McGee, and husband Robert Scott.
Lorrayne was a devoted Catholic and member of Saint Brendan Catholic Church. Everyone who knew her can remember her love of angels, which she surrounded herself with. She daily would pray for family and friends saying novenas for everyone except herself. Her faith in God was unshakable. Being a lifelong resident of Elkins, she attended Saint Brendan School then was a graduate of Elkins High School, top ten percent of her class and a Cum Laude graduate from Davis & Elkins College. She was also a graduate of John Robert Powers modeling school in New York. One of her life's biggest passions was teaching which she did most of her adult life. She began her teaching career at Buckhannon Upshur High School, and then moved back to Elkins to teach at Elkins Junior High and the Elkins Vo-Tech school. Lorrayne always said how being a teacher brought her many fine memories. She would often talk of students who touched her heart and were special to her. She always said "nothings more important than truly loving what you do, And I love being a teacher." She retired in 1987. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa; Randolph County Retired Teacher Association, the H. W. Daniel's Unit # 29, American Legion Auxiliary; Pi Beta Phi national fraternity, WVEA and NEA.
As a mother and parent she was always a strong figure for her children to look up to and always had just the right kind soft words to say to comfort in times of need. She had a special softness that allowed her to solve any problem with a smile and hug and a feeling of love. She always made her home just that, an expression of Love. One of her favorite things to do was spending time with all her friends. She cherished the time with her friends and always said how lucky she was to have so many close friends to share her life with. She felt so blessed and loved you all very much. And Rosalee Wilhelm, she looked forward to your visit every week; thank you.
Lorrayne is survived by many loving family members. She and her first husband James had two children, Dr. David M. McGee of Wheeling and Jaime Sue Cupp and her husband Philip of Elkins. Nothing was more important to her than her children and their happiness and she showed that with each moment together. She was also blessed enough to have three very special grandchildren from Jaime; Leesa Ice, Marissa Ice and Sophie Cupp. These three girls were the spark in her eye and brought her joy and happiness every day. Jamie and Phil also shared three step grandchildren, which were very special to her, Courtney, Brice and Grant. She is also survived by her loving sister, Dr. Gloria Marquette Payne. Gloria played a very special role in Lorrayne's life; she was the big sister, her best friend and often her mother figure. Their bond was very unique as they lived their lives together in Elkins sharing in everything. The love Lorrayne had for Gloria is difficult to put into words, only to say it was truly spiritual and blessed and one of a kind. Her eyes would light up every time she saw Gloria, comfort that only ones family can bring. She was also lucky enough to have three wonderful nieces and one nephew who she shared so many things with; Debbie Fragle and husband Dean and son Austen; Debbie always seemed to brighten her day. JoAnn Gabel and husband Paul; JoAnn was the first grandchild in the Marquette family and so dear to Lorrayne's heart, they shared many special things, and Jane Dennie who reminded Lorrayne so very much of her sister Mary Jane, and Mark Carrico who always seemed to know the right thing to say to bring a smile to her face. Also surviving is Lorrayne's sister in law, Fay Maynard and her son's, Sam, Ken and Seth. She also had many great nieces and nephews; Jason Gabel, Missy Terry, Lora White and Kaelyn, Marin and Brayden Dennie.
After the passing of her first husband Lorrayne was blessed and able to marry a second time to Robert "Bob" Scott of Elkins. With this union she gained four step children whom she cared for deeply; Lenny, Charles (Chick), Marshal Scott and Libby. Living in Elkins, Chick and Darlene Scott daily shared their children as Lorrayne's new grandkids. Jason and Mathew whom she loved as her own. Many Scott grandchildren thought of Lorrayne as a new addition to their family and a new grandparent; Kimberly, Amanda, Lauren, Tyler, Hannah and Andrew. She loved you all.
Jaime and David want everyone who assisted with the care of their dear mother to know just how much she appreciated you and your help, and how much they appreciate all your efforts and kind care of their mother. She had been very ill for many months and was able to spend her last days at home because of everyone's help. We thank everyone for all you did for her. Mary Jane Henthorne for all the time you helped our mother in her home, Davis Memorial Hospital, all of her doctors, and nurses who helped her in times of need. And a very special gratitude goes to our cousin Ginger Brown for her love and patience in caring for our mother in her final moments. We couldn't have done it without you.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 to 8 PM, Sunday. On Monday morning, September 19, 2011 Mrs.
