Louis DePetro, Sr. was called home on Tuesday, October 11, 2011, at the age of 85, surrounded by the love and prayers of his loving family. Louis was born May 4, 1926 as the ninth child of Louis and Antoinette (Cavalucci) DePetro. He was born, raised and died in his home on the corner of Wright Street and Presque Isle Avenue in Marquette, where generations of wonderful memories were made. Louis attended Lakeview Elementary School in North Marquette and Graveraet High School. In 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, joining his three brothers who were already serving in World War II. He fought in the Asiatic Pacific operation receiving many decorations and citations, and is remembered for his many stories about the war. After being honorably discharged in 1946, he began working at the Northwest Service Station that his father built. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion with the 40 et 8. In 1950, he married Kathleen Doherty, who preceded him in death in 2004. Together they owned and operated the Northwest Service Station in North Marquette until their retirement in 1977. He was well known for his wine making and musical talents, always willing to share either with family and friends. He was a devoted Detroit Red Wing fan and was well known for his prominent Christmas billboard near the Northwest Service Station. He is survived by his three loving children, Louis (Linda) DePetro, Jr., Marie (Thomas) Gregorich, and Tom (Melani) DePetro; eight precious grandchildren, Jeffrey (Katherine) Gregorich, Michael (Emily) Gregorich, Kristi (Jason) Lemire, Nickolas (June) Gregorich, Kimberly (Ryan) Poupore, Toni DePetro, Nico DePetro and David Gregorich. He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren; his sister Rita Rothenhoefer; his sister-in-law Eleanor Doherty; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his siblings Anne Peano, Rocco, Joseph, Anthony, Theresa, Grace Hanson, Samuel and Francis, as well as his parents. Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 15, 2011, at St. Michael Catholic Church, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Larry VanDamme officiating. A luncheon will be served in the parish center following mass. Burial will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Pallbearers will his loving caregivers. The family wishes to thank Lake Superior Hospice for their support in addition to his wonderful caregivers. Louis' obituary can also be viewed at www.canalefuneral.com where relatives and friends may leave a note of remembrance. The Canale-Tonella Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
