Louis Robert Soscia, Sr., 89, a member of the greatest generation, passed with grace from this life on March 3, 2011, surrounded by what mattered more than anything in his life -- his family. A proud and loving father, grandfather and devoted husband for 61 years, he will be greatly missed by the love of his life, his best friend and wife Mary, along with their six children, and seven grandchildren. Born into this world on January 15, 1922, the oldest child of Italian immigrants Maria Scarpulla Soscia and Emilio Soscia, he was raised in his beloved Brooklyn, New York, along with his brother Anthony, who predeceased him, and his sister Olga Soscia Soren of Rockaway Beach, New York. As a child growing up in Brooklyn, it was in 1930 that he became a life-long fan of the New York Yankees. He cherished the memory of attending the 1936 and 1937 World Series, where he witnessed the sweet victory of the Yankees defeating the New York Giants during both championship games. After high school, Lou Soscia enrolled at High Point College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Following America's involvement in World War II, he served his country in the European Campaign as a member of the 2nd Infantry Division, 9th Regiment. He fought for his life during the Ardennes Campaign in December 1944, also known as the Battle of the Bulge, which earned him a bronze star. His faith in God brought him home safely to those who loved him. Upon his return home, he continued his college studies at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., earning a bachelor's and master's degree. While a student at George Washington University, Lou Soscia fell in love with a fellow student -- the incredibly beautiful Mary Hillyer Norment. They married, following their college graduation, on March 4, 1950. After making their home in Washington, D.C., a family soon followed. Each child was a welcome addition to the Soscia family, making Lou a proud father and grandfather to his final breath. Lou Soscia was so fortunate to have watched each of his children grow into accomplished adults and establish fulfilling careers. His family grew from eight to nineteen members through the marriage of his children and the birth and adoption of his grandchildren. Lou Soscia had a successful 28-year career as an executive with Metropolitan Life Insurance that brought his family to Virginia Beach in 1966. His community involvement was important to him as was his devotion to St. Nicholas Catholic Church where he started the Meals-on-Wheels program and served as president of the church's Men's Club. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club for 40 years, serving as president of the Lynnhaven Chapter. For 46 years, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus where he also served as president. A man of his word, who loved his country, Lou Soscia was always willing to help those in need or less fortunate than himself. He is survived by six children, Mary Lou Soscia and her husband Duane Thomas Mecham, Nancy Lou Soscia and her husband Wesley Gordon Neal, Kathryn Lou Webb and her husband Lee Webb, Robert Louis Soscia, Louis Robert Soscia, Jr., John Louis Soscia and his wife Cecelia Faulkner Soscia, and seven grandchildren, Robbie, Courtney, Ryan, Conor, Gavin, Marta, and Molly. The Soscia family extends their gratitude and appreciation to the attending physicians and nursing staff at 3 West Wing, Sentara Va Beach, and Seaside at Atlantic Shores for the tender loving care of their dear father. The family will be receiving friends at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, 712 Little Neck Rd., Va Beach, from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 7. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, March 8, 11 a.m. at St. Nicholas. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to St. Nicholas Catholic Church Funds or the Virginia Beach Education Foundation in memory of the Louis R. Soscia, Sr. College Scholarship Fund, 2512 George Mason Drive, Va Beach, VA, 23456. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
