Settles On February 13, 2010, the spirit of Louise E. Settles passed into the hands of the Lord at the age 93. Louise was born in Framingham, Massachusetts on June 30, 1916 to Vincenzo and Jenny Femia (nee Jenny Matteson). As a young woman she worked as a bookkeeper for Bethlehem Steel and then left home in March of 1943 to join the Women's Army Corp. She served in the South Pacific in New Guinea and Philippine Islands in 1944. There she met her future husband, Charles Ray Settles, who was serving in the Army Air Corp in New Guinea. They were married in Manila on June 9, 1945. At the end of the war in the Pacific, the couple left the service, returned to the U.S. and located in Ft. Worth, Texas to begin their family. They had two children Charles Ray Jr. (1947) and Judith Lee (1951). Charles Ray Sr. reentered the service in 1947, joining the United States Air Force. The family lived at Fairchild Air Force Base, near Spokane, Washington from 1952 to 1959 and Kadena Air Force Base, Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 1959- 1962 before locating in San Antonio, Texas, where Charles Ray Sr. retired from active duty. The family remains in San Antonio Texas. Louise enjoyed life as an Air Force family and volunteered in many service related organizations including Air Force Wives Club and as a medical assistant at a women's health clinic as a Gray Lady. She additionally served as Cub Scout Den Mother and Sunday School Teacher. She was a member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church for over 40 years, where she served on numerous committees and sang in the church choir. Her talents included sewing, embroidery, knitting, quilting, painting, baking and canning. She enjoyed playing games with friends and family and particularly enjoyed crossword puzzles. Louise is survived by her spouse of 64 years, Charles Ray Settles Sr.; her son Charles Ray Settles Jr. and wife Pat, daughter Judi Wade and husband Mike; daughter-in-law Donna Lindsey Settles; grandchildren Kathleen Settles-Horejsi and husband Frank, Rachel Settles Moore and husband William Tyler Moore III, Thomas Robert Settles and wife Cynthia, Scott Ray Martin and wife Aimee, Kathryn McVey and husband Kent; great grandchildren Ashlyn Moore, Matthew Joseph Settles, Madelyn Moore, Charles Robert Settles and Merilyn Moore, Michael McVey, Matthew McVey; and siblings Joseph Femia and wife Dolly and Edie Drennan and husband Eddie. Services will be held at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, 4114 S.W. Loop 410, San Antonio, Texas on Wednesday, February 17, 2010. Visitation at 9:30 AM followed by services at 10:30 AM. Louise will be put to rest at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in private service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to Chapel Hill United Methodist Church.
